The Sankofa Emancipation Project Reimagines Jubilee Day with Modern Tribute to Ancestral JoyHouston, TX - May 19, 2025 – In honor of Juneteenth and the rich legacy of “Jubilee Day,” the Sankofa Emancipation Project, a powerful photo-based art initiative designed to reconnect modern-day Houstonians of the African diaspora with the celebration, creativity, and radical joy of their ancestors was launched. “The Sankofa Emancipation Project is about more than just remembering,” Kristi Rangel. “It’s about honoring the spirit of our ancestors and inspiring future generations to reflect ontheir legacy.”On June 7, 2025, more than 100 Houstonians answered the call and were photographed alongside a flower-adorned slab car, echoing the style and spirit of early 20th-century Juneteenth parades with a modern Southern twist.
