I am a mixed media artist working in acrylic, watercolor, drawing, found objects and collage. I incorporate Adinkra symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d’lvoire in West Afrika, to communicate evocative messages that represent parts of my life and those around me. My work is informed by my experience as an African American woman with deep southern roots awash in the blood, sweat and tears of my ancestors. Reflecting on Toni Morrison’s life and legacy, after her death in late 2019, inspired me to do what I have always been meant to do-- create art. Morrison was a single mother who didn’t publish her first book until her late 30s, who went on to win accolades and awards. When I am creating art, I tap into my ancestral roots and drink from the same cup of celestial energy that fueled her creativity. My work is not simply that of a Black woman artist, but a human amplifying the divinity present in women, people of color and nature.
